A Weekend of Loves

Well this was the first official weekend of my summer and I spent some quality time with people I love and doing things I love...

I spent most of the weekend with one of my dear friends who I love very much, Sarah Parson. Her husband went out of town and with a 2 year old boy and a new baby girl, Sarah enlisted the help of me! I was happy to spend some time with her and her cute kids. I spent most of the weekend holding sweet Eliana, which I didn't mind, so Sarah could help out her boy, Jacob. And he is all boy. But he is the cutest, I loved how he would get this huge smile everytime I had him give me a high five.

I love going to church and I love spending time with my cute Sunbeams. We learned about the many things we can do today. While playing Reverent Ball I was "shushed" because I wasn't being reverent. I guess I will have to practice being more reverent this week.

Today was Memorial Day and I love seeing the cemetary by my house full of people visitng Veterans and their loved ones who have passed on. I love seeing the sea of colorful flowers showing how people remember. I should have taken a picture, sorry. I love that it was sunny and I got to play outside today. I love BBQs and I got to attend 2 of them today! I love going to the movies and after seeing Prince of Persia I may love Jake Gillenhal now. I love my friends and the fact that I got to spend time eating and laughing with them (my most favorite things) makes this day simply wonderful! I love that I am healthy, and happy, I have a family that loves me, friends who think I am funny;), and I love that the summer is here and I am ready to play!

I loved spending time with Eliana this weekend. She is one cute baby! This picture is black and white because I was playing with the settings on my phone. I also love my iPhone. :)

I do love the Step Up movies so the fact that Step Up 3 is coming soon makes me happy. And in 3D!

I love cake and I love America, so I made a Flag Cake for one of the BBQs I attended. It was pretty good!

Hope of America Looks Good

In my efforts to become the greatest person on earth, I happily volunteered to help my friend at a show put on by hundredes of children called Hope of America Showcase. This showcase is hundreds of students from all over Utah Valley coming together to form a great big flag and sing some songs about our nation, very touching. My friend needed someone to help move the kids into empty spaces so we had a full, gorgeous flag, and not a spotty, holey flag. Seemed easy, ask kids to scoot over, put other kids in the places, done! Well the first night, yes nice and easy and I enjoyed the Hope of America show. Second night, little crazier, kids everywhere and I wondered why I agreed to this madness. But, kids singing and dancing altogether gets to me, that's why I work with em... behind the screaming, shouting, silliness are cute, innocent, growing minds. However, another part of the show that was my very favorite was the Dancing Grandmas! 100 grandmas from ages 50-90 dressed up in their sparkly, cowboy hats, doing the Robot dance equals pure joy. The 90 year old grandma even does the splits at the end. They are a Utah favorite and I believe they will be appearing on America's Got Talent this summer.
So I had fun with kids of all ages and believe the Hope of America is strong, sounds good, and looks gooood.

Yep, I helped make that flag o'kids look so good! Hard to believe the Hope of America can all sit there like good innocent children. Fortunately I didn't have to sit with them.

The Dancing Grandmas doing the Robot! Yep I zoomed in on the 90 year old grandma. I am going to join this group when I am a grandma, so fun!

Goal Achieved Unhappily Ever After

A few months ago I decided I needed something to work towards and look forward to in my life. Lots of my friends compete in various type of sporting events. I have done the occasional Fun Run here and there, but nothing too extreme. So I was going to compete in a big race of some sort and amaze my friends and family that this old basketball/volleyball player still had some competitive blood in her! I narrowed it down to a running or biking race. I knew taking up biking would be muy expensive and I could do running for free so... I was going to enter a half-marathon!

Now at the time I decided this back in February I was feeling good that I could run 3 miles, so having to run 13.1 was going to be near impossible. But I would do it! I started by training for a 10K in March. I took a running class, got some REAL running shoes and started running. I have to say I am a fairweather runner and if it is too cold, you won't find me outside, but I also realized I can't stand running on a treadmill longer than 30 minutes, I go crazy! Fortunately the weather stayed pretty nice over the next few months. I competed in the 10K, running 6 miles in one stretch for my first time ever. I was quite surprised by the fact it wasn't that bad. I thought I had done an awesome job taking only 50 minutes to run the race. However, when I found I was towards the bottom of the placings for my age group, I realized I needed to get faster. May 1st was coming fast so I started uping my mileage and running hills to try to get faster. I was feeling like a runner and looking like a runner (according to my trainer). I was even thinking I could take a medal in my age group. That dream was quickly crushed when I looked at the race results from last year. So I was excited that I would just finish the half-marathon in a time I had set for myself. (And my mom told me she would give me a medal if I finished!)

Race day came, I had a new running outfit, I had eaten a yummy pasta dinner the night before, a good breakfast that morning, I was ready. It had been snowing in Utah the past couple of days, but the forecast looked promising for race day. As I waited at the starting line I felt good. Now something to note, the last couple of runs I had done prior to race day my knee had started really hurting by the end. But today none of that mattered, I was going to run a half-marathon!

The cannon sounded and we were off. I was feeling good, running to the beat of my music, thinking about crossing the finish line in just a few short hours to a cheering crowd. Then the rain started, a light rain, not too bad, but as we ran towards the big, dark, looming clouds, I knew the light rain was just the beginning. As I ran through hail and sleet I was feeling like a real runner, I could run in anything, I was invincible. Then I came to mile 5 and my knee started hurting. I started to say a little prayer that it would go away becuase I had run a lot further than 5 miles and needed to be on my game today! At mile 6 both knees started hurting, I took some Advil at the water station and was off, I was not quite half way and I was in pain. The rain was pounding hard, water was streaming into my eyes, which was kind of nice because it hid the tears of frustration that were tearing up. I finally had to succomb to the pain and start walking. I wanted to run the whole marathon, so this was devasting. I started to run again and when my knee buckled or the pain became unbearable, I would walk briskly. I saw my goal time come and go and started to feel bad for my roommate who was waiting at the finish line for me in the cold and rain and I couldn't contact her.

The remaining 7.1 miles of the race was a mixture of slow, strained running and fast walking. The snow started falling and my hands were numb. Since I couldn't run for very long my body temperature couldn't keep me warm and I became cold. Cold, numb, in pain, and full of frustration or not the things a girl should be feeling in her first half-marathon. I felt foolish as I watched runners pass me by panting for air and my lungs were in fine condition since I couldn't run long enough to exert them in any fashion. A half-hour past my goal time I crossed the finish line. Cami and serveral other volunteers were still there cheering me in. They were awarding the medals to the winners as I finished too late to be considered. I had finished my goal unhappily ever after.

I came home and did some research on my knees to find out I had Runner's Knee. It is something runners get if they up the mileage in their run too quickly, run on concrete, and haven't built up their thigh muscles to be as strong as their hamstring muscles. Basically my knee cap had moved out of place so my femur was rubbing against the knee cap the whole time I was trying to run causing the pain. Runner's knee gets worse and happens sooner into your run the worse it gets. So I have had it the past few weeks and not thought about it, but it definitly made it's presence known when I ran my race. The good news is I now know how to treat it and train correctly so I can run another half-marathon in August. Hopefully it will be a beautiful, bright, sunny day, my knees and legs will be healthy and I can live happily ever after!

Here I am celebrating that I finished the Provo City Half-Marathon!

Cami was so nice to come and watch me finish in the yucky weather! Notice my hair is drenched and it ain't from sweat.

Peep Roast!

Ah, the first campfire of the season. The mountains, the friends huddled around the fire, your hair and clothes smelling like smoke... all signs of a fun spring/summer night. And of course with every good fire you need to roast... Peeps! Well, a good campfire in April demands the roasting of Peeps instead of the common marshmallow. Some good friends held a Peep Roast and I was more than happy to start my warm weather traditions with a fun night in Provo Canyon. Friends, fire, Peeps, all I need for a good night! And just so you know, roasted Peeps taste just like roasted marshmallows! Yummy!

My roommate, Cami and I enjoying the Peep Roast. These little guys sure look happy sitting on their stick of death.

Now I wasn't planning on eating all three of these Peeps. They wanted to "tan" together!

"Help me! I'm melting, melting."
Don't worry, they sacrificed their lives for the good of my tummy.

Spring Break with the Fam

One of the perks of being in the education field is the vacations given throughout the year (and of course a summer off, but we can talk about that perk another time). I had a whole week off for Spring Break and needed to use the time wisely. I pondered a visit back to the city, a cruise, a little jaunt to Vegas, but decided to head home and see my family. My dad had heart surgery shortly before my Spring Break and my mom, who is a teacher as well, had her Spring Break the same week as me! So I thought I would earn some points in the favorite child contest and go home to help my mom take care of my dad. It worked out nicely that they live in Florida so I would catch some rays in my spare time.

Well by the time I arrived on Easter Sunday, my dad was home from the hospital and was doing quite well. He didn't need much help at all which left time for me to enjoy the sun and our pool pretty much everyday. The temperature was perfect all week. I would go running in the morning, sit by the pool and read, then enjoy spending time visiting with my grandparents, my brother and his girlfriend, and their dogs. My parents call the two dogs, Sheba and Chico, their granddogs since they have no grandchildren. They pick the dogs up from my brother's house quite often and play with them, then take them back when they are done with them. They are getting some good training in for being grandparents to actual children I think.

Now I did do some projects for my dad so points in the favorite child contest were still earned. I am totally winning! The day I headed back to Utah it was raining in Florida, so I was content with a week of sun, got me a little tan, then back to good ole Provo! Happy Spring Break to me.

Here is my dad playing with his granddog, Sheba. He looks pretty good for just having had heart surgery.

This is the other granddog, Chico. He is super little(only 2 lbs.), and super cute.

This is one of the projects I worked on with my mom for my dad. We put this big umbrella together. Just so you know, my mom is standing on the base of the umbrella... I am taller than her! :)

Back by Popular Demand

So my blog has pretty much been untouched since I left DC last August. I guess I felt like my normal life in Provo, Utah is hardly as exciting as living the life of a city girl. But I have had a few requests from friends who actually want to hear what I have to say about life. Go figure! So while I can't promise I will have something to "blog" about as often as living the city life, I will try to make more frequent posts of things going on. And if I have nothing truly entertaining to write about, I will make something up. It's all about the fans after all. :)

Final Days as a City Girl

I am actually writing this post from Utah so my days as a city girl truly are over. Here is a photo display of what I accomplished in my last few weeks in Washington D.C.

They presented a movie on Monday nights on the National Mall and the event was called Screen on the Green (clever little title I think). While the movie we watched was awful there is something about watching a movie on the grass of the National Mall with the capital in the background that still makes it fun.

The only touristy places I had left to visit were the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. I loved the Library of Congress! It was my favorite place, there is something about seeing great architecture and a whole bunch of books in one place that gives me goosebumps. It was just gorgeous.
This is the Supreme Court, also neat to see. They are working on updating it as you can tell.
I was able to visit with many "old" friends. This is my dear high school friend, Nicole. She is a bigtime lawyer in DC and has a super cute baby. It was so fun to catch up with her and chat about our high school friends.

Since I have been in many BYU wards, I have many BYU friends. Here are a couple of my favs. Joseph and Regina both live in DC now and it was so fun to go to dinner and chat about silly things with them. Joseph totally fits the t-shirt he is wearing by the way, but you can't trust him!

Now there are many fabulous ice cream places in DC and Virginia. The fact that I cannot fit into any of my clothes is testimony to their deliciousness and my dedication to visiting them often. One of my favs was called Dairy Godmother, (even the title is great!) and evidently I am not the only one who enjoys a nice yummy custard from them...
My roommate Patti was asked to sing at the Kennedy Center the day before I left. I was so excited for her. Singing at the Kennedy Center is a big deal! I was told Nora Jones sang there before she made it super big. I am sure Patti is on her way. She is on the left and sings beatifully, she was the best one there! It was so great to be there for her and enjoy her show.

We had a roommate dinner as a good bye to me and you can see why I had so much fun this summer. We took like 6 pictures because we were goofing off so much! So there is me, Patti, KaRyn, and Mary on the end. Sharyn was out of town with family and we missed her dearly for our roommate picture. We got along so well and had probably too much fun together!

As you can see my whole summer was filled with adventures, happy times, and great people. This has been an amazing summer and while I am actually excited to be back in Utah and get another school year under way, I will never forget my summer as a city girl and the things I learned about myself. It was also special to see my family and dear friends I have known for many years as well as make new friends I will know for many more.
